The Temporary Fortaleza Building of the National Defense Ministry is the largest demountable modular construction project in Colombia and Latin America.
For this task, the ANIM (Agencia Nacional Inmobiliaria Virgilio Barco Vargas) was selected via a public bidding process Consortium led by Morris Group as well as two other well-known local partners.
This innovative construction is modular, self-supporting, prefabricated, and relocatable, and its structure is 90% reusable; it consists of 2,382 metallic modules grouped by four types of structural units, which when assembled allow its extension or subdivision, to be assembled, moved, displaced and relocated quickly and easily; with low environmental impacts that are framed within global trends of circular economy and efficiency in the use of materials, water, and energy, and that contribute to strengthening the country's economic, environmental, and social development model.
The Fortaleza Building had a design, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning time of 12 months; a surface of 37,212 square meters, 4 levels, and over 12 meters high; with offices that house 4,800 officials and a significant contribution to the generation of direct and indirect labor that reached 3,515 jobs.
The panels of the outer structure are disassembled, relocated, or renewed for new use, which makes possible the reduction in the demand for raw materials, reducing the energy consumption required to create another building that meets a new need. In addition, being a lightweight structure, its foundation requirements are minimal.
This novel building has earthquake-resistant technology in structural steel with an energy dissipation capacity coefficient of R=1.5, complying with the NSR-10 F3 Title standard. Likewise, it complies with the RETILAP, RETIE, and RITEL standards.
This modular construction has controlled prefabrication processes, efficient assembly systems, low operating and/or maintenance costs, which transform them into sustainable systems reducing the environmental impact in terms of noise and water pollution, reduction of construction waste and emissions of particulate material throughout the construction process.
